Default Prepaid Card vs. Cash as a gift
Prepaid Cards and Cash both have their advantages as a gift to me.
Prepaid Card (let's use a VanillaVisa Giftcard as an example):
- Lets users, who would not normally be able to, shop or spend money online (younger crowd that has no access to a credit card or debit card or anything like that)
- Takes up less space - Honestly if you're going to go shopping after your birthday from the money you received, it would definitely be easier to carry around a little piece of plastic then a wad of cash
- Younger people seem to enjoy using it (most younger (teenagers & such) don't have a debit card or credit card and actually seem to enjoy a prepaid card such as this because it is a new experience for them

Cash:
- Can be used for more things than the prepaid card (say you actually want to save the money , can put the cash into your bank account)
- If you already have cash saved up for something it's easier to just use all cash then X% in a gift card and the rest in cash
- Never expires! Most prepaid cards either expire or start losing value over time. If you actually DON'T use one by this period it usually takes X amount of dollars from it monthly, cash doesn't!)

All in all I still do see a prepaid card as a better gift. The reasoning being cash is a everyday thing to almost everyone, a prepaid card is less common and suffices as a better "gift" purpose to me. Not to mention you can use it online for shopping which now a days almost everyone is doing!

So give me your thoughts, which do you prefer?

I think prepaid cards are a good idea as long as you don't forget how long you have to use it before they deduct a fee.

I think prepaid cards are good when making online purchases. It's a lot safer.
