Default Finance fees
Are you very familiar with the operations of your credit card? Do you know how all the various finance fees are calculated? I don't know yet but I am in the process of researching since I am always being charged.

Nobody will ever know all the fees that come with their card because the banks don't want them to know.

Well each credit card has different charges and each bank offers different cards with different interest rates etc. You should call into your bank in which you have the credit card from and ask them exactly what each charge is for and they will tell you. The best way to avoid high interest rates is to pay off your bill in full at the end of each month.

I agree with JaneyJane, the best way to avoid high charges is by fully paying off all your credits by the end of the month. Remember, the credit card company makes most of their money when you
1. don't pay everything back immediately (just look at the interest rates- incredible!) or
2. use your credit card to withdraw cash.

The business model of the credit card company (which usually belongs to a bank) is giving credit to people. By providing this facility, credit card companies encourage, no I think they actually rely on:
1. people spending more money than they own
2. people being too lazy to keep exact track of their spending and finances.

So, in theory, if you only spend money that you already earned, you might as well pay in cash and therefore don't have to worry about remembering to pay back the credit card company by the end of the month.

Things like earning reward points or airmiles every time you use your credit card are designed to reinforce that specific behavior of using your credit card instead of cash. Why would credit card companies do that? Because they know that sooner or later most people will either be late with their repayments or unable to make a full repayment because they have spend too much. And that is exactly the moment when the bank/credit card company starts earning money from you!

Because this can actually be quite a sour deal for the customer, many banks try to sweeten the offer by showering you with presents (free gifts here, free gifts there) in order to get your commitment to start using a credit card instead of cash.

Each credit card company has different interest rates and the method with which finance charges are calculated.
