Default Used or Old Credit Cards
What do you do with your old credit cards? Do you surrender them to the company or do you keep it?

I keep most of my old credit cards. I like to collect things and credit cards are one of them.

Do you think its safe to keep used credit cards?

I keep my old credit card and keep them open and active. When you close a credit card, your credit card issuer no longer sends updates to the credit bureaus and the credit scoring formula places less weight on inactive accounts. After 10 years or so, the credit bureau will remove that closed account's history from your credit report. If the account was an old one (which it would be after 10+ years), losing that credit history will shorten your average credit age and cause your credit score to drop.

Closing your oldest credit card could impact your credit score in terms of credit age (15% of your credit score). But not until that account drops off your credit report after about 10 years or so.

Your credit score looks at a variety of factors including: the length of credit history, which includes the amount of time all of your credit card accounts have been opened; and your credit utilization, which is the amount of available credit that you are currently using.
