What Is PAYPAL?

I'm sorry if I'm new to this, I'm a late bloomer when it comes to technology. What is Paypal and how do you do transactions with it?

I have been reading the topics under this section but I can't understand what Paypal is all about. Is this like a bank where I deposit my money and then use that money to buy things online?

I hope someone would help me. Thank you in advance.
